Welcome to the Open Class Master Showman Contest! This fun and educational event gives adults a chance to try their hand at showing livestock and small animals in a friendly competition. Below is a quick guide for each animal you may be handling, inspired by 4-H showmanship standards. These short summaries will help you prepare.
Cow (Beef or Dairy)
Lead the cow with a halter on your right side, keep the animal under control and walk with confidence. Set the feet squarely when stopped and maintain eye contact with the judge.
Sheep
Hold the sheep under the jaw or with a halter, keep it clean and braced. Move smoothly and stay alert to the judge’s position.
Alpaca
Lead gently with a halter, avoid pulling. Keep the alpaca calm, walk at a steady pace, and show patience.
Pygmy Goat
Show with a collar or lead, standing square and alert. Walk at a steady pace and stay in control.
Rabbit
Gently pose the rabbit facing sideways to the judge. Keep it calm while showing body parts like ears, teeth, and feet upon request.
Turkey/Chicken
Hold gently with wings secured, keeping it calm. Walk short distances and display the bird’s size and feather condition.
Pig
Use a small cane or whip to guide the pig in a zigzag pattern, keeping it moving calmly. Avoid touching the pig with your hands.
Good luck, have fun, and enjoy learning what it’s like to step into the show ring!
