Rules

You don't have to be an El Paso County resident to participate in the competition, however, only El Paso County residents will be eligible for the Best of Show award. All entries must be homebrews, no professionally brewed beers.

Accepted Beer Styles

The following summery beer styles will be accepted and judged according to the 2015 BJCP Style Guidelines. Styles other than these (even as the base for a specialty beer) will not be eligible for awards.

    • 1A and B: American Light and Lager
    • 2A: International Pale Lager
    • 3A and B: Czech Pale and Premium Pale Lager
    • 4A: Munich Helles
    • 5D: German Pils
    • 7A: Vienna Lager
    • 27: Pre-Prohibition Lager
  • Hybrid Beers
    • 1C: Cream Ale
    • 5B: Kolsch
    • 18A: American Blonde Ale
    • 19B: California Common
  • Pale Ales
    • 18B: American Pale Ale
    • 21A: American IPA
    • 21B: Belgian IPA, Rye IPA, White IPA only
  • Wheat and Rye Beers
    • 1D: American Wheat
    • 10 A and B: Weissbier and Dunkels Weissbier
    • 27: Gose and Roggenbier
  • Belgian Ales
    • 24 (all): Witbier, Belgian Pale Ale, Biere de Garde
    • 25B: Saison
  • British and Commonwealth Beers
    • 11 (all): Ordinary Bitter, Best Bitter, Strong Bitter
    • 12 (all): British Golden Ale, Australian Sparkling Ale, English IPA
    • 14 A: Scottish Light
  • Specialty Beers (must use one of the accepted styles as its base)
    • 29A: Fruit Beer
    • 30A: Spice, Herb, or Vegetable Beer

Entry Registration

You will be able to add your entries to the system beginning Friday, June 1, 2018 at 12:00 AM, MDT through Saturday, June 30, 2018 at 5:00 PM, MDT.

$7.00 (USD) per entry.

Entry Limit

There is a limit of 100 entries for this competition.

Each entrant is limited to 1 entry per sub-category .

Pay Entry Fees

After creating your account and adding your entries to the system, you must pay your entry fee(s). Accepted payment methods are:

  • Credit/debit card and e-check, via PayPal

Entry Acceptance Rules

For each entry, submit 2 12-oz. bottles with a bottle ID form (printed from this site after you register) attached to each bottle using rubber bands (do NOT tape or glue forms onto the bottles). Bottles should have no labels, embossing, or other identifying markings aside from the bottle ID form. If there are designs or writing on your bottle caps, black them out with a marker.

Brown bottles are preferred, although green or clear bottles are OK. Capped, corked, or flip-top bottles will all be accepted. However, bottles will not be returned to contest entrants.

All requisite paperwork must be submitted with each entry. Don't forget it at home when you drop off your beers.

Be meticulous about noting any special ingredients that must be specified and indicate the base beer style used for specialty beers. Failure to note such information may impact the judges' scoring of your entry and your eligibility to win an award.

Packing and Shipping

Carefully pack your entries in a sturdy box. Line the inside of your carton with a plastic trash bag. Partition and pack each bottle with adequate packaging material. Please do not over pack!

Write clearly: Fragile. This Side Up. on the package. Please only use bubble wrap as your packing material.

Enclose each of your bottle labels in a small zip-top bag before attaching to their respective bottles. This way it makes it possible for the organizer to identify specifically which entry has broken if there is damage during shipment.

Every reasonable effort will be made to contact entrants whose bottles have broken to make arrangements for sending replacement bottles.

If you live in the United States, please note that it is illegal to ship your entries via the United States Postal Service (USPS). Private shipping companies have the right to refuse your shipment if they are informed that the package contains glass and/or alcoholic beverages. Be aware that entries mailed internationally are often required by customs to have proper documentation. These entries might be opened and/or returned to the shipper by customs officials at their discretion. It is solely your responsibility to follow all applicable laws and regulations.

Awards

Winners will be announced during an awards ceremony on opening day of the El Paso County Fair, July 14, 2018 at 3:00 p.m. Ribbons will be awarded in each category – 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. There will also be a Best of Show award, however, it's limited to El Paso County residents only.

Anyone who enters beer in the competition will also receive one (1) free admission to the fairgrounds on opening day, July 14, so they can attend the awards ceremony and enjoy fair activities. Mark your calendar!

If you cannot attend the awards ceremony, score sheets will be mailed/emailed and ribbons will be mailed to you.

Results will be posted to the competition website and the Brew Brothers website after the ceremony.

Win a chance to Brew with a Pro at Black Forest Brewing Company. Black Forest Brewing reserves the right to not pick a winner. Winner must be an El Paso County resident.
